Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is a sexually transmitted infection that spreads by contact with infected blood, unprotected sex, childbirth or breast-feeding. HIV damages the immune system and interferes with its ability to fight infection and disease. It causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is a chronic and life-threatening condition. HIV can be diagnosed through blood or saliva testing using antigen test, antibody test and nucleic acid test. Medications called antiretroviral therapy are used to control HIV and prevent further complications. Antiretroviral therapy comprises drugs from different classes of anti-HIV drugs such as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors, integrase inhibitors and entry inhibitors. This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts and emerging trends in assessment and management of HIV and AIDS. It aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of these diseases. This book provides significant information of this discipline to help develop a good understanding of HIV/AIDS and related fields.
