The nervous system refers to a sophisticated and complicated system, which controls and coordinates physiological functions. It is divided into two major parts, namely, the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Central nervous system consists of the spinal cord and brain. Peripheral nervous system majorly consists of all other neural elements such as autonomic nerves and peripheral nerves. There are various disorders which can affect the nervous system such as structural disorders, vascular disorders, degeneration, infections and functional disorders. The symptoms can differ from individual to individual but may include memory loss, tremors and seizures, muscle wasting and slurred speech, muscle rigidity, impaired mental ability, loss of feeling or tingling, and lack of coordination. The treatment and management of nervous system disorders may include spinal cord stimulation, medicines, spinal surgery, deep brain stimulation and physical therapy after brain injury or stroke. Most of the topics introduced in this book cover the pathogenesis and clinical management of nervous system disorders. Those with an interest in these medical conditions would find it helpful.
