Sickle cell anemia or sickle cell disease is an inherited red blood cell disorder in which there are not enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. It is a group of disorders caused by genetic mutation. Sickle cell disease depicts symptoms such as anemia, episodes of pain, swelling of hands and feet, delayed growth or puberty, and vision problems. A blood test can be used to diagnose sickle cell anemia. It can be treated by medications for pain management, penicillin for preventing infections and surgeries such as blood transfusion and stem cell transplant. If left untreated, it can cause stroke, acute chest syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, organ damage, blindness, gallstones, leg ulcers and pregnancy complications. This book presents the complex disease of sickle cell anemia in the most comprehensible and easy-to-understand language. The topics covered herein deal with the core aspects of this disease. This book will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.
