The condition wherein an individual suffers from difficulty in swallowing is termed as dysphagia. It might cause pain or take more time and effort to move food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach. It is broadly categorized into two types, namely, esophageal dysphagia, which is associated with the esophagus, and oropharyngeal dysphagia, that is related to mouth and throat. Esophageal dysphagia is caused by achalasia, diffuse spasm, esophageal stricture, ring or tumor, GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis, scleroderma, and radiation therapy. Neurological disorders or damage, pharyngoesophageal diverticulum, and cancer are responsible for oropharyngeal dysphagia. Dysphagia can be diagnosed by barium x-ray, dynamic swallowing study, endoscopy, fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, manometry, and imaging scans. Oropharyngeal dysphagia can be treated by learning exercises and swallowing techniques while esophageal dysphagia requires esophageal dilation, surgery and oral medication. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments in relation to dysphagia. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies, and advanced studies on this topic have been included herein. This book will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.
