The thyroid is a gland that produces hormones that help control many vital functions of the body especially metabolism. A medical condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce the right amount of hormones is referred to as thyroid disease. The two major types of thyroid diseases are hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism happens when the body makes too much thyroid hormone whereas hypothyroidism is when the body makes too little thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism can be caused by Graves' disease, nodules, thyroiditis and excess iodine. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, postpartum thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, and a non-performing thyroid gland can cause hypothyroidism. The treatments for thyroid disease include radioactive iodine, beta-blockers, surgery, thyroid replacement medication, and anti-thyroid drugs such as methimazole and propylthiouracil. This book discusses the fundamentals as well as modern approaches to thyroid disease. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. This book will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers.
