An extracorporeal technique of providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to patients whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange to sustain life is referred to as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). It involves drawing blood from the body to facilitate oxygenation of red blood cells and removal of carbon dioxide. The device used for this process is a membrane oxygenator or an artificial lung. The two most prominent forms of ECMO are veno-arterial ECMO and veno-venous ECMO. In both forms, blood drained from the venous system is oxygenated outside of the body. It is returned to the arterial system in veno-arterial ECMO, whereas, in veno-venous ECMO the blood is returned to the venous system. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments in relation to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies, and advanced studies on this topic have been included in this book. It will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.
